Three of Swords

The Three is heartbreak, stated without decoration. Painful truth, betrayal, grief with a specific cause. It is one of the most literal images in the deck and one of the least ambiguous.

Heartbreak, rejection, a truth that wounds. It has happened; the card does not offer a way around it. Rain clears eventually, and the image includes the rain for a reason.

Beginning to heal, or refusing to. Pain held onto past its term. Sometimes forgiveness, sometimes a wound reopened.

Betrayal, separation, a painful revelation. The clearest heartbreak card in the deck. Reversed, recovery underway, or a hurt that is still governing everything.

Harsh feedback, a rejection, a professional betrayal. Painful and usually accurate.

A financial loss with an emotional dimension, money entangled with trust.

Grief as a legitimate spiritual condition. Sorrow that does not need to be reframed to be survivable.

Heart conditions read literally by many practitioners. Depression, grief, the physical toll of emotional pain.

Three swords pierce a red heart against grey rain. No human figure, which is why the card lands so directly. There is nobody to identify with and nothing to interpret around.

Golden Dawn called it Sorrow. It is one of the very few Smith minors with no human figure, alongside the Eight of Wands, and the absence is clearly deliberate in both cases.
