What this is

Four things, done properly

Most tarot sites are a card generator with a keyword list attached. This is the version we wanted to exist.

  • 78 card meanings

Every card with upright and reversed meanings, love, career, money, spirituality, health, symbolism and the card's actual history, not a keyword list.

    Browse the deck
  • A real course

Fifteen lessons from "what tarot is and is not" through the numerical logic of the minors to reading cards in combination. Free, in order, no prerequisites.

    Start learning
  • A journal that remembers

Log what you drew and what happened. Over months it shows you which cards keep returning, in which moods, around which subjects.

    See the journal
  • People to read with

Discussion under every card, public journals if you want one, reader profiles and streaks. Optional, and off by default.

The deck

Every one of the 78 has a page like these, meaning, symbolism, history, and what it says about love, work, money and health.

How a reading works

Four steps, no mystique

The mechanism is not a secret. Knowing exactly how the cards are chosen makes the reading more useful, not less.

  1. Ask something answerable

Questions starting with "what" or "how", about you. "What am I not seeing here?" beats "will it work out?" and the site will nudge you toward the first kind.

  2. Choose a spread

One card for a specific question, three for a situation, ten if you genuinely need the whole picture. Each spread page says what it is for and when not to use it.

  3. The deck is shuffled server-side

Fisher-Yates over all 78 cards using a cryptographic random source, with a real coin flip for each reversal. You cannot see the cards before they land and neither can we.

  4. Read it, then write it down

You get a full interpretation per position plus what the spread says as a whole. Save it, add your own notes, and check back in a month. That loop is where the learning is.

No one has ever shuffled this deck the same way twice

78 factorial

Not a figure of speech. Shuffle 78 cards and the order you are holding has, almost certainly, never existed before and will never occur again, and the arithmetic is easy to check.

The number of orders 78 cards can fall in116 digits long

11324281178206297831457521158732046228731749579488251990048962825668835325234200766245086213177344000000000000000000. Approximately 1.13 times ten to the power of 115.

Roughly 1.13 × 10¹¹⁵. Every shuffle picks one of them.

  • 10³⁵

    orderings for every atom

There are roughly 10⁸⁰ atoms in the observable universe. Deal 78! out among them and each atom gets about 10³⁵ orderings of its own.

  • 1 in 10⁸⁶

    covered since the Big Bang

If all 117 billion people who have ever lived had shuffled a tarot deck once a second since the Big Bang, they would have seen about 10²⁹ orderings, roughly one in 10⁸⁶ of them.

Track: all 78! orders. Gold: every shuffle humanity could ever have made. Drawn at 1px, because its true width here is a 10⁸⁶th of the track.

  • 10⁴⁷×

more than a pack of cards

A 52-card pack has 8 × 10⁶⁷ orderings, already famous for being more than anyone can picture. A tarot deck beats it by a further factor of 10⁴⁷.

Your reading is a number that big, narrowed to a handful of cards

You never see all 78 at once. A spread takes a few off the top. Even so, counting the order they land in and whether each one is upright or reversed:

On the channel

Memento Diem, once a day

One episode a day covering all three of our sites: the sky above, the card in front of you, the dream behind you. Everything in it is computed or quoted from a page you can go and read, and it says which on screen.

Today's episode will appear here.
Until then, everything published so far is on the channel.

There are three of these

Tarot, astrology and dreams, all free right now

Memento Arcana is one of three. Same people, same approach, everything written out and sourced rather than generated, pointed at tarot, astrology and dreams in turn.

Nothing here asks for a card.

Common questions

Straight answers, without the mystique.

  • Yes, all of it, right now. All 78 card meanings, every spread guide, the whole Learn Tarot course and the daily card are free and always will be, and nothing else on the site is restricted either. A membership exists and can be bought, but it does not currently withhold anything from anybody.

  • No. Readings here draw from a full digital 78-card deck, shuffled server-side. If you do own a deck, the card pages and journal work just as well as a reference for physical readings, plenty of people use the site that way.

  • Yes. Every reading is drawn on the server using a cryptographic random source with a Fisher-Yates shuffle, and reversals are a genuine coin flip per card. Nothing is weighted toward pleasant cards. The one exception is the collective daily card, which is drawn deterministically from the date so that everybody sees the same card.

  • You can start a new reading, but we would gently suggest not doing it on the same question. Redrawing until you get an answer you already agreed with makes the whole exercise pointless. Sit with the difficult card. It is usually the useful one.

  • We do not claim it does, and this site is not built as if it does. A reading describes the shape of a situation and its trajectory. That is genuinely useful and it is not prophecy. Nothing here should be treated as a forecast of events.

  • No. Every card meaning here was written by a person. A reading is composed from those meanings plus what your particular draw produced: the elemental relationships between neighbouring cards, how many Major Arcana came out, suit balance, repeated numbers, Aces, court cards. Those are computed from your spread, which is why no two readings match. Nothing is generated by a language model.

  • You can ask, and you will get a reflective reading. What you will not get is a diagnosis, a financial recommendation or legal advice. The engine is explicitly built to decline those and to point you at a real professional instead. That is a limit, not an oversight.

  • Private by default. Readings and journal entries are visible only to you unless you explicitly change an individual item to public or unlisted. Deleting your account removes your readings, journal and comments entirely.
