Judgement

Judgement is the reckoning that wakes you up. A call arrives, the whole of your history is visible at once, and you answer it. This is not condemnation. It is the moment of accurate self-assessment and the decision that follows.

Awakening, absolution, a calling. Reviewing your life honestly and choosing accordingly. Second chances, reunions, and long-delayed forgiveness, of others or of yourself.

Ignoring the call. Harsh self-judgement standing in for actual change. Refusing to forgive, or refusing to be forgiven. The reckoning postponed, which does not make it go away.

A relationship reassessed with clear eyes. Reconciliation, or a definitive decision after long ambivalence. Reversed, holding a grudge past the point where it protects anything.

A calling rather than a job. Work that answers something in you. Also performance review, and the honest evaluation of whether this path is yours.

A financial reckoning, the full picture, finally looked at. Consequences of long-running decisions arriving together.

Rebirth and vocation. Pluto's territory: what is buried comes up, and cannot be reburied. The card of genuine, irreversible personal transformation.

A turning point in a long condition. Recovery that follows from finally facing something. Reversed, avoiding a diagnosis you suspect.

Gabriel blows a trumpet and grey figures rise from open coffins with arms raised. They are not pleading, they are answering. The cross on the banner is deliverance; the mountains behind are the same range from Death and Temperance. Man, woman and child rise together: this is collective, not individual.

Straightforwardly the Last Judgement of Christian iconography, and one of the least altered cards in the deck. The fifteenth-century versions and Waite's are nearly the same picture. The occult renaming to "the Aeon" in Crowley's Thoth deck shifted it toward an era changing rather than souls being weighed.
