One rank, four suits
The Pages in tarot
Beginners and messages. Something new arriving, or someone new to this.
Pages are the youngest court rank and the least experienced. They carry news, they study, and they are enthusiastic in a way that has not yet been tested.
Read a Page as early rather than as immature. The enthusiasm is genuine and the competence is not there yet, and the deck does not treat that as a flaw. Page of Pentacles studying a coin, Page of Cups meeting a fish in a cup, Page of Swords watching the horizon with the wind up: all of them are at the beginning of their element.
Pages are also the traditional messenger cards. A Page in a spread often points at information arriving rather than at a person.
Like the Aces, the Pages sit outside the zodiac scheme: they are elemental rather than seasonal.
The four Pages
The same idea in four elements. Reading them side by side is the fastest way to see what the rank is doing and what the suit is doing.
Page of WandsWands · Fire read the full meaningenthusiasm, exploration, news
Page of CupsCups · Water read the full meaningsensitivity, creative message, wonder
Page of SwordsSwords · Air read the full meaningcuriosity, vigilance, new ideas
Page of PentaclesPentacles · Earth read the full meaningstudy, diligence, new opportunity
The rest of the sequence
Ace through Ten, then the four court ranks. Reading down this list is reading the minor arcana as one story.
Number crossed with element
This is the whole trick to the minor arcana. Forty numbered cards look like forty things to memorise and are really ten numbers crossed with four suits. Learn what a Five does and what Cups are, and the Five of Cups is constructible before you have ever read its page.
The lesson on the numbers, Ace through Ten teaches the sequence properly, and the one on the court cards covers the sixteen that need their own study.
