Temperance

Temperance is the art of proportion. Two things that do not obviously belong together are combined into a third that is better than either, and the skill is entirely in the ratio and the patience.

Moderation, blending, patient recalibration. Find the middle without making it a compromise nobody wants. Healing follows here, and it follows slowly. Excellent after any of the deck's harsher cards.

Excess or imbalance. Overcorrection. Impatience with a process that only works at its own pace. It can also mean two things being forced together that genuinely do not mix.

Harmony built through adjustment rather than luck. Two different people making a workable third thing. Reversed, extremes: hot then cold, all or nothing.

Work-life balance in its real sense. Collaboration across disciplines. Steady progress from steady effort. Reversed, burnout from a pace that was never sustainable.

Measured, proportionate handling. Diversification. Neither hoarding nor spending. Dull, correct advice.

Alchemy, the middle path, the reconciliation of opposites. Sagittarius aims high, and Temperance is the discipline that keeps the arrow true over distance.

Recovery and rebalancing. Moderation in everything, including moderation. Sagittarius rules the hips and thighs. This is one of the deck's clearest healing cards.

An angel pours liquid between two cups, one foot on land and one in water, grounded and fluid at once, and the stream between the cups flows at an angle no physical liquid would. The irises and the crowned path to the mountains mark the route; the triangle in a square on the chest is spirit contained within matter.

The third cardinal virtue in the trumps. Its name comes from temperare, to mix in proportion, originally about literally watering wine, and only later about restraint. Waite added the solar disc on the angel's brow and the winding path, tying it to Sagittarius and the long journey.
