Ace of Cups

The Ace is emotion offered before it has a shape. An open heart, a feeling arriving, love in its unformed state. The cup is overflowing already. The only question is whether you will take it.

New love, deep feeling, emotional opening. Compassion and intuition are available. Receive rather than pursue: this card is about being given something, not about winning it.

The heart closed. Emotion blocked, repressed or spilled uselessly. Love offered and refused, or offered somewhere it cannot be received.

The strongest opening in the suit: new love, a proposal, a relationship beginning. In an existing bond, feeling renewed.

Work that means something emotionally. Creative or caring vocations. A workplace where you are actually happy.

Not primarily a money card. If it appears, prosperity that follows from doing what you love rather than from strategy.

Grace. Devotional feeling, compassion, the sense of being filled from outside yourself. The Grail card.

Emotional wellbeing improving. The heart in both senses. Hydration and the body's water are a standard literal reading.

A hand from cloud holds a cup with five streams pouring out, more than five senses could account for. A dove descends with a wafer marked with a cross; lotuses float on the water below. Waite explicitly intended the Grail.

Waite, a member of a Rosicrucian order and deeply invested in Grail literature, wrote about this card more devotionally than almost any other in The Pictorial Key. The W-shaped cup mark is often read as an inverted M for mem, water.
