The Emperor and Four of Swords

Authority and deliberate rest. The Four of Swords is the knight laid out on the tomb, recovering by choice. Beside the Emperor the tradition reads a person who is normally in command taking a genuine pause, and treats it as discipline rather than as retreat.

Associated with stepping back from a situation you are usually running. Read as sensible and as temporary.

A leader taking leave, or a structured period of recovery. Frequently read where the rest has been scheduled rather than collapsed into.

Both cards are about control, including control of when to stop. The pair reads a properly bounded rest as an exercise of authority rather than a lapse in it.
