Nine of Wands and Nine of Swords

Exhaustion and the night. The Nine of Wands is still on its feet, wounded, watching; the Nine of Swords is sitting up in the dark with the head in the hands. The tradition reads the pair as depletion that has stopped being sustainable, and it is the heaviest pairing among the Nines.

Associated with carrying a relationship alone past the point of capacity. Read as a state of the person rather than a fault of the relationship.

Endurance that has become anxiety. Frequently read where someone is holding a line nobody has asked them to hold.

The Nine of Swords is over-read as catastrophe and is more usually the fear at three in the morning, which is genuinely larger than the fact. If this is where a reading is, the honest next step is a person rather than another card.
