Rest and retention. The Four of Swords stops in order to recover; the Four of Pentacles stops in order to keep. The tradition reads the pair as a period of deliberate inactivity where the motives are mixed, and it is unusually interested in which is which.

Associated with a pause that is also a guard. Read for people taking time out who are also making sure nothing changes while they do.

Consolidation: no new commitments, nothing given up. Read as sensible in the short term and as a position that hardens if it is held.

Recovery has an end and hoarding does not. The useful question is what will tell you this period is over, and whether anything currently would.
