The Hierophant and The Devil

An iconographic pairing before it is an interpretive one: the Devil sits where the Hierophant sits, hand raised in the same blessing, two figures kneeling below instead of two acolytes. The tradition reads them as one structure and its inversion, and the pairing is about what a person has agreed to belong to.

Associated with a relationship held together by its form rather than by its content: the arrangement, the expectation, what other people would say. The pair is not cynical about that and does not call it false.
