The Hermit and The Hanged Man

Two kinds of stopping, and the tradition is careful about the difference. The Hermit withdraws on purpose and carries the lamp; the withdrawal is chosen and has a direction. The Hanged Man is suspended and cannot move, and the turn in perspective arrives because nothing else is available. Together they read as a pause that started as a choice and is no longer one.

Distance, of a kind neither person is enjoying. Associated with waiting that has gone on long enough to become the situation itself.

A deliberate step back that has become a stall. Read for sabbaticals, notice periods and projects held up by something outside the room.

Work out which card you are actually in. The Hermit can end the pause and the Hanged Man cannot, and treating one as the other wastes the time either way.
