The Emperor and The Hierophant

The two authority cards, and the distinction between them is the whole reading. The Emperor is authority that comes from position and can be exercised directly. The Hierophant is authority that comes from a tradition and is only ever borrowed. Drawn together the tradition reads a situation governed by both, which is usually a situation with a rule and a rule-maker who are not the same.

Commitment with a public form to it. Long associated with marriage, and more precisely with the part of it that is an institution rather than a feeling.

Hierarchy and standards together: a boss and a professional code, a client and a regulator. The pair reads well for work where doing what you are told and doing it properly can come apart.

When they conflict, notice which one you are actually answerable to. People usually obey the Emperor and feel guilty about the Hierophant.
