Justice and The Hanged Man

The hanged figure comes from the Italian shame paintings, where a man convicted of treachery was depicted hung by one heel; the card originally followed a verdict. The tradition has since read the suspension as voluntary, but the older sense survives in this pair: a consequence that has to be borne.
