Eight of Swords and Nine of Swords

The two cards of a trap, one outside and one inside. The Eight is bound and blindfolded between swords that leave a clear path out. The Nine is sitting up in the dark with the head in the hands. The tradition reads them together as a restriction that is largely constructed, and the suffering that is entirely real regardless.

Associated with feeling unable to leave or unable to speak, and with the nights that follow. The pair never treats the distress as disproportionate.

A situation that looks inescapable from inside it, with the sleeplessness to match. Read for people who can list their options and cannot see them.

The classical reading is that the Eight is more solvable than it feels and the Nine is worse at night than in daylight. Both are true and neither is much comfort at 4am, which is why this pairing traditionally points outwards, to somebody else.
