Learning on a deck that does not have scenes on the small cards

Rachel Okonkwo ·

Inherited a deck where the Minor Arcana are just pips, so the Five of Cups is five cups in a row and nothing else. Every guide I read describes a picture that my deck does not have. Do I persevere or buy something with scenes on it?

Persevere and you will end up reading numbers and suits properly, which most people with scenic decks never bother to learn. It is harder for six months and better forever.

Get a scenic deck as well, not instead. Reading the same spread in both is the fastest way to see which parts of a meaning come from the tradition and which come from one illustrator in 1909.

Whatever you do, do not retire the inherited one. It will end up being the deck you actually keep.
